Westerly Pocket Parks #WLAM

Pocket parks are an important part of any community, especially those without convenient access to larger recreation facilities. These small parks, usually about a quarter acre in size, serve as informal gathering places where neighbors can relax, socialize, or play with their kids. Ideally, these outdoor spaces are located within a five-minute walk of all residences in a community and contain a variety of amenities for community members to enjoy.

PCS Group designed both Alpine Park and Cherry Park for the third phase of the Westerly community in Erie, Colorado. Unique theming for each park was a priority for the client, which we incorporated by drawing emphasis to the amenities in each. Cherry Park celebrates the color red in all its hues—from the Community Grove of tart Montmorency Cherries to the deep burgundy fall color of the Frontier Elm or Autumn Red Miscanthus to the bright red flowers of the Coronado Red Anise Hyssop. The changing seasons will highlight ribbons of planting, each season displaying something red. The park also features a 10,000 sq. ft. play lawn, a community playground, and custom shade shelter.

Alpine Park is a community gathering space featuring small scale, passive play equipment for both kids and adults. The design centers around a custom shelter that is flanked by play areas where small children can engage with alpine play elements. Opposite the playgrounds, a bocce court gives adults a chance to socialize and relax in a passive game. The display garden at the north end is planted with a xeric mix of perennials designed to mimic flora found at higher elevations.
