on the boards: freuhaus
Freuhaus is a proposed affordable Congregate Care community for elders. It’s located at the former Fruehauf’s Outdoor Furniture Store in Downtown Boulder, directly adjacent to the Boulder Valley Regional Center, which provides seniors with access to transportation, dining, entertainment, and medical services. The community includes 106 permanently affordable units with amenities, an onsite restaurant and café, and administrative offices. The proposed project continues the residential fabric of the surrounding community while introducing affordable Congregate Care that will enrich and enhance the surrounding businesses.
This infill site takes advantage of a host of parks, activity fields, restaurants, grocery stores, movie theaters, and a multitude of other entertainment/shopping opportunities within a short walk, bike, or bus ride. The proposed landscape design takes inspiration from nature and the outdoor amenities are incorporated into the site with organic flowing forms. Water walls, barbecue areas, seating, and community gardens all create an interactive space for residents to enjoy outside for all seasons, in a protected courtyard. The overlook area that spans the courtyard takes inspiration from a treehouse and incorporates art with function, bringing vertical visual interest to the landscape.
